Dr. Vitek obtained his BS from MIT in 1968, MS from
California Institute of Technology in 1969 and his PhD from MIT in 1973.
He joined ORNL in 1980 and is currently a senior research staff. He
has worked at Olin Corporation, New Haven, CT, Max-Planck Institut
für Metallforschung, Stuttgart, Germany, Metals Research Laboratories,
Nippon Steel Corporation, Futtsu, Japan. His expertise is in phase
transformation behavior in steels and nickel base superalloys and the relationship
between microstructure and properties, Extensive application of computational
thermodynamics and kinetic models to understand the microstructural evolution
during weld solidification, Research on the non-equilibrium solidification
behavior in stainless steels during laser welding, Development of models
for describing diffusion-controlled transformation behavior in multi-component
systems and Research on the effects of rapid solidification on non-equilibrium
phase formation including amorphous phase formation in metallic alloys.
