Long Life Resistance Welding Electrode Project
Objective
The overall objective of the ORNL task is to develop computational model
that describes the electrode wear behavior during resistance spot welding
of galvanized high-strength steel. This model will be developed to support
the Long Life Electrode (LLE) Project under Advanced Materials Division (AMD)
of USCAR organization. The ORNL model will track the electrode deformation
characteristics that leads to electrode wear. This model will consider
the interactions between rapid thermal cycles, loading conditions on the
deformation and microstructure evolution in various copper alloys, including
existing and new development alloys. The model will be evaluated with
the experimental data generated by the USCAR organization. The model
will be designed in a modular fashion so that it can be easily extended to
spot welding conditions of aluminum alloy.
