Fundamentals of Welding and Joining
The Department of Energy's Basic Energy Sciences (BES) Welding Science
Program in the only long-term major basic welding research program in the
United States. The program endeavors to provide the necessary thrust
and leadership to advance welding science and technology to compete with
other international efforts. The BES Welding Science program was
established by the Division of Materials Sciences of BES in 1976.
The objectives of the research program are as following.
-
To understand solidification behavior of weld metal
-
To develop mathematical models to describe weld processes
-
To obtain insight into the fundamentals of phase stability during welding
and subsequent service.
The overall objective of this research is illustrated in the following
schematic picture. The integrity and productivity of welding processes
depends on interaction between process--microstructure-property-process
control & automation issues. The modeling will be used as a tool
to understand these interactions.
